Fernweh is a German word loosely translated as “far-away sickness”. I grew up all over the United States, from starting Kindergarten in Hawaii to graduating High School in New York. My family moved every year as a minimum-in fact some years I attended 2-3 schools. I believe this created that sense of fernweh in me...never feeling at home, always longing to be somewhere else...I still to this day thrive on change. Others may fear that, but oh how I embrace it!
I acquired my first Devon Rex in 2014 as we searched for a lower allergen breed for our family. My husband and our youngest son both had documented cat allergies but found some breeds manageable over the years. As an avid animal lover my entire life, I was knowledgeable in the many breeds of cats that existed and that though no breed is truly hypoallergenic, some breeds have been known to work for some allergy sufferers. Our three boys were given some options and to my delight they picked the Devon Rex! When I tell you that Devons are like potato chips-they absolutely are! My husband was never a self proclaimed cat lover prior to being owned by these adorable elven imps, but here we are-starting my dream of a cattery to promote and protect this very special breed with his absolute blessing!
We acquired our first Devon Rex, a very pretty Calico girl (oh how I love tortitude!! You’ll quickly see I am quite fond of tricolor girls!) who my son named Ruby. Within a year we had another Devon Rex, and then I was bit by the show bug! My first experiences in showing were not easy as I am introverted by nature and honestly had NO idea what I was doing-BUT I was having fun! Within a year of minimal shows my pretty little girl had achieved her Grand Premier (the spay/neuter class in CFA equivalent to a Grand Champion). Not long after I attended an event 9 hours away from home that changed the entire direction of my life (yes, that dramatic!!)....Devon Heaven 2017. It was here that I met the most incredible group of breeders and began breaking out of my introverted shell. I wanted to learn more about showing...and eventually this grew into my desire to breed so many more people could experience the joys of being owned by a Devon! The next couple of years involved three more Devons being added to our family and I showed extensively across the country-my kitties were extremely successful, earning high Regional Wins and the very first Devon Rex agility national winner (2nd place in the entire CFA world, 2018-2019) was my proudest accomplishment. That kitty is the amazing GP, RW, AGN Meikai’s Toblerone, affectionately known as Dale. He is so special and has quite a fan base too! In 2019 I became a Certified Agility Ringmaster. Dale’s cousin Leo (PR, AGN Meikai’s Chocolate Flash) was the 5th fastest agility cat in the world for the 2019-2020 season. We are so proud!! With a solid start to our Devon journey, we have arrived at the beginning of the rest of our story-the creation of Fernweh cattery!
Fernweh Devon Rex cattery is located in the Charlotte, NC area. Our cats are PKD, CMS, FeLV, and FIV negative. We scan all breeding cats for HCM every 12-18 months. Our Devons are truly our furkids and are raised in our home alongside our three boys and two miniature poodles. Our kittens leave our home after their third round of vaccinations, and are dewormed, microchipped, and spayed/neutered. We do not sell intact cats. A written contract, two year health guarantee for congenital defects, and CFA registration papers will be provided with each kitten. It is our hope that each family leaves with a Fernweh kitten knowing that they have our forever support and welcome
updates with open arms!!
